Summer Safety For You And Your Family

No matter what your family’s summer plans — whether you are traveling to visit relatives by vehicle or plane or staying home to avoid high gas prices — make sure the good times are not interrupted by poor planning or a preventable accident.

Travel Smart

If you do travel this summer, plan in advance and remember to protect your home while you are gone.

  • Leave a copy of your itinerary with a trusted friend or relative.
  • Notify your home security company of the dates you will be away.
  • Arrange to have your mail and newspaper delivery stopped.
  • Set a timer or have a friend turn your lights on and off so your home does not look empty.

If you have chosen to fly to your destination, remember that heightened security has increased the attentiveness of airport personnel.

  • Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight.
  • Bring valid identification (driver’s license or passport).

If you will be driving, have your vehicle fully inspected one to two weeks before leaving home to help ensure it is safe and ready to go. Having problems with your vehicle while on vacation can quickly put a damper on your trip.

You can also help keep your family safe on the road by:

  • Being well-rested and alert behind the wheel.
  • Never leaving children or pets alone in your vehicle.
  • Making sure each passenger wears a seatbelt and that children are securely fastened in a child safety seat appropriate for their size and age.
  • Placing valuables out of view.
  • Avoiding distractions while driving, including eating, drinking, using cell phones, adjusting the radio and watching sights along the road.
